First Director on 64 Years of Chinese

Professor Albert Dien, Stanford professor emeritus and the first director, returned to Taipei and toured ICLP on June 1. He spoke about his experiences as a student of Chinese and head of one of the earliest Chinese training programs in Taiwan. Professor Dien is now in his eighties and his speech offers a rare and truly vivid early account of the study of Chinese as a foreign language from a man who helped shape the field. What follows is a transcript.
台灣新客 New Visitors to Taiwan
In Taiwan, the blooming of the Royal Poinciana flowers and the singing of cicadas signal the arrival of summer and the beginning of the ICLP summer program. The decorated scene naturally paints itself as if preparing to welcome our new visitors to Taiwan.

A Certain Four Letters
ECFA...
Although memorizing dialogues from Everyday Far Eastern Chinese or the protracted sentence patterns of Thought and Society has its masochistic appeal, new students, no doubt harried by their first two weeks of intense Chinese training, are probably ready to test the mettle of their growing vocabularies outside the classroom.
