This semester, ICLP students are taking part in a weekly language exchange activity with NTU medical school students, organized by NTU professor Chun-pai Hsieh (謝君白) and ICLP teacher Meei-yuan Fann (范美媛). The purpose of the group is to enhance language skills and encourage cultural exchange between NTU and ICLP students. The event is hosted by Anita Wong (王瓔錚), a 5th year NTU student and co-hosted by ICLP students Kiara Hearn (何佳) and Richard Benes (白瑞德). The group recently had its third meeting this past Friday, Oct. 14th.
Language exchange sessions begin with a one hour group activity that allows NTU and ICLP students to interact while also strengthening language ability. In the last meeting, NTU students played against ICLP students in a role playing game. In this activity, one student is required to use his or her non-native language to convince a second student, seated, to get out of the chair and leave with them. At the same time, the seated student must also persuade the standing student that it is not necessary to leave. For instance, during Friday's activity one NTU student said: "The zombies are coming! You have to come with me. I need the antidote!" An ICLP student, comfortably seated in her chair, replied "沒有關係,殭屍是我們創造的,所以不用走。" After three minutes, the round ends and those watching then vote on the winner, based on each student's ability to use their target language to persuade.
After the group activity, snacks are provided and students are given a chance to socialize and practice language skills with one another. In the most recent meeting, students enjoyed pizza and chatted about their language experiences, hobbies, and travel plans in Taiwan. The language exchange group has a contact book and a Facebook group for students to organize (i.e. trips, language exchange) outside of the meetings. The ICLP-NTU group meets every Friday from 3 pm to 5 pm in Room 447 in the ICLP building. 如果有興趣的話,請寫email給主辦人Anita Wong (b96102115@ntu.edu.tw)或在每週五的三點到ICLP的447演講室跟語言交換生一起集合!
