50年的歲月是什麼樣的滋味呢？原來這個滋味就如同台灣高山烏龍一般：渴望的心想像著所有可能的味道，當茶湯在入口的瞬間，茶樹吸取自盤古開天闢地以來的精華就在口腔裡與味蕾共舞著，接著滑行到舌沿兩側，而後緩緩地滑進了喉嚨，在滋潤了喉嚨之後，又重回了口腔，就這樣不斷地回甘下去。
To me ICLP’s 50-year history is like one of Taiwan’s most famous products, high-mountain oolong tea. Untouched, the tea seems to contain all possible tastes, but when sipped the sweet and fragrant liquid goes down smoothly and satisfyingly.
與創所所長丁愛博教授伉儷的聚晤正是這樣的滋味，就是這麼回甘。1962年丁愛博所長創立了全球首座海外培訓漢學家目標語的教學機構，並且獨具慧眼，在翻譯教學法當道的時代背景下，創立了本所以口說能力帶動聽、讀、寫四項技能同時到位的教學觀，本所迄今受益無窮。
The joy of meeting with the first director of ICLP, Dr. Dien, is comparable to oolong’s heavenly taste. In 1962, Dr. Dien founded the first institute in the world to train sinologists. Despite the overriding “translation approach” teaching method of the time, Dr. Dien created a unique pedagogical philosophy – the training of oral analytical skill followed by the development of listening, reading and writing skills. Ever since, students of ICLP have benefited from this extraordinary teaching method.
下面這楨照片是本所跨越時空50年的全家福，前排正中者即是首任所長丁愛博教授，立於丁所長背後者即是現任所長梁欣榮教授。前排右起第一位是周慧強教授，周教授是丁教授的中文老師，也是本所資深退休教授。第二位是丁愛博教授夫人丁淑芳教授。左起第一位是丁愛博教授摯友-前師大國語中心主任李振清教授。第二位是張曉風教授，是丁愛博所長任內的本所教師。後排右起第一位是范美媛老師，第二位是陳立元老師，第三位是艾爾科技總經理林宜敬博士-丁愛博教授的外甥。第五位是周長楨老師，第六位是黃傳娟老師，第七位是本所校友薄瑞安先生，現就讀臺大法律研究所。第八位是柴菁菁老師，第三排頂天立地者也是本所校友畢達飛先生，現就讀臺大中文研究所。
The photograph below is a “family picture” of ICLP that recalls our 50-year history. The man in the center of the front row is Dr. Albert Dien and behind him is our current director, Dr. Leung. The first person on the right in the first row is Dr. Zhōu, Huì-Qiáng, who used to be Dr. Dien’s Chinese instructor. The second person is Dr. Dien’s wife, Dr. Dīng Shú-Fāng. The first person on the left of the front row is the former dean of the Mandarin Training Center at National Taiwan Normal University, Dr. Lǐ Zhèn-Qīng. The second person is Dr. Zhāng Xiǎo-Fēng, who was our Chinese instructor in Dr. Dien’s era. The first person on the right of the back row is ICLP’s Chinese Instructor, Fàn Měi-Yuán, followed by Chen Li-Yuan, Dr. Lin Yi-Jing who is Dr. Dien’s nephew and also the president of L Labs Inc, and then from right to left ICLP teachers Zhōu Cháng-Zhēn, Huáng Chuán-Juān, ICLP alumnus Bryan Beaudoin who is now a student of graduate school of Law at National Taiwan University, and lastly teacher Chái Jīng-Jīng. The tallest man in the picture is David Bratt, an ICLP alumnus who is currently studying at the graduate school of Chinese Language and literature at National Taiwan University.
三代同堂，是幽幽歲月換取的果實，是學術界薪火相傳最佳的寫照。本所歷經約半世紀，得以平安順遂，由衷感念歷任所長與所有維護本所精髓的人士，是以為記。
Three generations in this photograph reflect ICLP’s well-preserved academic heritage. I wish to extend my gratitude to all former directors and all those who helped to preserve the spirits of ICLP in the past half a century.
