| | Upon hearing this news we were extremely shocked; the rest of the world must have reacted similarly. While the US believes Israel has the right to defend itself, we condemn its excessive use of force in retaliating. It is undeniable that the Israeli military’s air-raid on Qana was excessively hostile. This inhumane attack on civilians is unjustifiable.
The US would like to emphasize the urgency and importance of implementing an immediate cease-fire on the Israel-Lebanon border. Peace and stability are what is most important, regardless of who should be deemed responsible for the conflict. If the two sides are not able to accept a complete cease-fire agreement, but instead continue to retaliate against one another, they will become trapped in the vicious cycle of war. This would certainly lead Middle East relations to fall into an unprecedented state of crisis. The longer this conflict drags on, the less hope there is for achieving peace in the future.
Given this, the UN will surely take on the role of mediator and hopefully authorize an international peace-keeping force for immediate deployment to the Israel-Lebanon border. While the US is a long-time ally of Israel and frequently in disagreement with Hezbollah’s actions, in such tense circumstances, who wins or loses is not as important as putting an end to the violence. In other words, the one and only goal is none other than peace. Therefore, the US is willing to participate in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon so as to support European Union nations in their mediation of the conflict and in order to prevent the killing of even more innocent civilians.
