Outside of formal language classes, the world village of ICLP has worked tirelessly in increasing diverse cultural exchange. ICLP hopes students can take advantage of studying abroad to attain a more profound understanding of traditional Chinese culture.

(In 1982, students attended a lecture held by the Pacific Cultural Foundation about Chinese folk customs. Dr. Li Chong-Koei explains the beauty of Chinese knot-tying.)

In order to help students more thoroughly understand Chinese culture, ICLP has opened numerous culture classes including Chinese painting, calligraphy, kung fu, and the art of tea. In these classes, students not only learn about Eastern art techniques, but also ponder the value of art in society and how these arts influence the ideology and daily life of Chinese people.

(In 1982, ICLP invites Ms. Rosa Lee (Yuan Wei-Zhi) to give a presentation on the characteristics of Chinese music, while also giving a live performance of the guzheng.)

(Mr. Cui Ren-Hui, a famous calligraphy, teaches a student how to use a brush to write Chinese characters.)

(A student displays a picture she drew of a bird using traditional Chinese bird-and-flower painting techniques.)

Culture classes are not limited to just sitting in a class or listening to a lecture. Students can also learn about the significance of the preservation of culture through other means, such as the “Classical Chinese Day” during the April 23rd International Book Day.

(In the 2010 “Classical Chinese Day” activities, students read and sing ancient Chinese poems.)

Other than culture classes at the school, ICLP has recently encouraged students to go out into the community, communicate with locals, and learn about local Taiwanese culture.

(In September of 2015, students learn about the manufacturing process of tea leaves at a local Maokong tea plantation.)

(In December of 2015, in the Jialan village located in Jinfeng Township in Taitung, students experience the millet farming culture of the Paiwan people.)

(In February of 2016, in coordination with the “Learn Chinese and Celebrate the Lantern Festival” activity held by the Ministry of Education, students design a show and interact with the audience.)

Cultural exchange is a two-way street. The “World Culture Days” planned by ICLP allow students of various nationalities to share their own culture. The students in charge of the culture days have displayed their traditional clothing, prepared special food and drinks, given presentations on the beautiful scenery, and explained unique cultural customs. From these culture days, teachers and students have expanded their understanding of various cultures.

(During the 2011 “Israeli Culture Day,” the students in charge prepare a famous Middle Eastern dish often eaten by Israelis: pita.)

Starting in 2016, ICLP even partnered with a local elementary school to allow ICLP students to step into a Taiwanese classroom. ICLP students spoke in Chinese as they introduced their own country and culture to the kids, thus helping to open their eyes to the world.

(In 2016, ICLP students go to Taipei Xinmin Elementary School to hold a “UK Day.” Afterwards, they pose for a picture with the children.)

Language is one way through which one can learn how to engage in cultural exchange. By organizing leisurely activities, ICLP helps students both learn about Chinese traditional culture and also bring their own culture to Taiwan. Getting to know the world and understanding different cultures need no longer be just theory in a book, but rather a personal experience.
