A Letter to the Heroes of ICLP Class of
’08-09
敬愛的英雄們：
Dear Heroes,
恭喜各位完成了9個月密集課程的訓練，就要或者已經進入人生的下一個階段。這幾天同學們藉著中文這個語言工具，通過PPT等數位影像檔案，把各位珍貴的知識﹑見解與研究，在全所師生面前發表出來，進而根據大家所提出的問題來回應，甚至討論，我為各位的表現感到非常的驕傲。有了用中文發表專題演講的體驗之後，未來各位使用中文進行與中文相關的各項專業工作就更加輕而易舉了。
Congratulations on having
completing nine months of our intensive training program, and going on to
the next phase in life! Over the
past few days, we’ve seen you masterfully employ your Chinese language
tools. With the assistance of
programs such as Powerpoint, you have presented in front of all the faculty
and students, and shared your precious knowledge, insight, and research
results. Furthermore you engaged
with the audience during the Q&A sessions, which at times developed
into substantive
discussions. I am extremely proud of
all of you. With the experience of
delivering a presentation in Chinese under your belt, you will find it much
easier to perform professional tasks in the language.
去年9/17,18在新生入學口試中，各位都說來ICLP的目的，為的是提高中文的能力。在9/24的新生簡介會上，梁所長﹑我﹑范老師都跟各位說ICLP的責任就是要幫助各位提高中文能力，尤其是口語上的評析能力。記得當時，我用過去10年來學生進步的統計圖， 以「通向語言天堂的梯子」做比喻，跟各位說明只要持之以恆地努力，各位也會獲得同樣的成就。
Last year,
during the entrance oral exam (on September 17, 18), you expressed your
purposes for coming to ICLP—mostly of course, to improve your Chinese. During the September 24 orientation, our
director Prof. Leung, Fann laoshi and I also told you that your
improvement—especially with regard to speaking—is ICLP’s
responsibility. I remember showing
you a chart of the progress made by ICLP students over the past ten years. I used the metaphor of “a ladder to
language heaven” to explain that you can achieve the same success as long
as you persevere. (see below)
