It was announced today that Stanford University's Taipei Research Center is preparing to open in September of this year.

According to the university's announcement, the research center in Taipei—the university's fifth international branch—will focus on the training of high-level research skills in the Chinese language, for both undergraduate and graduate students. In the initial stages, a select number of students will register at the center as formal students of Stanford University.

The Stanford Center's first appointed director, Associate Professor David S. Nivison, presently teaches Chinese and philosophy at Stanford University.

Instructors and administrative personnel will be selected in Taiwan, with particular emphasis on experienced language teachers.

Management of the center will be overseen by a special committee of professors from Stanford's History department and by the university's Asian Languages department.

Because Stanford's Taipei and Tokyo centers receive both graduate and undergraduate students, director of Stanford's Graduate School, Howard Brooks, will also supervise. Howard Brooks also oversees two other Stanford language centers in University of Hamburg and Bad Boll, Germany.
