Learning Chinese through Debate
藉由辯論學中文
邱禮/Jeffrey Chivers (美)
Apple.
September. Fast. Foundation. Soccer. Relevant.
Talented. Interaction. Destroy. Referendum. Stock
Market. Relinquish. Insignificant. Insidious. Vocabulary.
Tired. Sleep. If only language learning were as simple as vocabulary acquisition,
I'd be done studying Chinese! Unfortunately, as those of us who have
spent days, months, and years crushing the vocabulary in our language
textbooks know all too well, simply knowing the meaning of a word and being
able to put the words we know together to express a complete thought are
two completely different beasts.
Somewhere along
the line we learn how to verbalize our frustration: "I've hit a
barrier. I can't seem to improve. I'm going to go insane!"
Finally we ask ourselves: “What is the point?!” The answer is
different for everyone. My answer, however, was rather simple: when I leave
ICLP, I want to be able to participate in professional or academic
discussion, express my opinions accurately - even if not eloquently - and
feel comfortable continuing to study on my own. It is my experience
that the ICLP program prepares students very well for such endeavors, but
that there may still be room for higher level verbal courses above those
that ICLP currently offers. In the end, a small group of students set out
this semester to design a course that focuses on training spoken Chinese
through a specific exercise: debate. (continued)
