ICLP Dream Team
Takes on Game Show
Bryan K. Beaudoin
[Mar. 14]
ICLP students, teachers and staff headed to the Nangang
(南港)
studios of China Television (中國電視) to compete on game show Tiaozhan 101 (挑戰101). Seven of the ICLP’s
finest pitted their knowledge of entertainment, history, science and
miscellaneous trivia against over 90 other contestants on the hit Taiwanese
program.
After
several hours of patient waiting, the ICLP team mounted the towering
grid-like structure from which contestants buzz in their answers. “We’re right in the middle,” one student
remarked with surprise, exasperation or perhaps sheer terror upon realizing
that they had been positioned right in the middle of the 101
contestants. Celebrity guest
participants from Xing Guang Da Dao (星光大道)—a
program similar to American Idol—sat just one row
below.
Tiaozhan 101 is a game of elimination. A participant’s chances of striking it
rich increase each time he or she survive a multiple choice question. Eliminated players continue to aid to
their teammates until being revived for the next round. Student David Bratt
correctly answered successive questions about Confucius and the NBA proving
himself a master of trivia East and West, and garnering attention from the
show’s host Hu Gua (胡瓜). (continued)

ICLP Language Exchange Program Already In Bloom
Lauren Moffett
Although
in the midst of preparing for this winter term's final examinations,
recently, a group of ICLP students already started looking ahead towards the
spring term. Eager to put into
practice the language improvement gained in the classroom and delve deeper
into the culture of the place many have called home for the last six
months, students attended a preliminary briefing of next term's language
exchange program between ICLP and NTU undergraduate students. NTU Professor and ICLP Director Leung Yanwing lead the session introducing the goals of such
a program to provide students with the opportunity to supplement classroom
language learning via personal interaction with Taiwanese student
peers. Administrative Director Chen
Li-Yuan echoed Director Leung's sentiments emphasizing the great cultural
exchange opportunity for both ICLP and Taiwanese students alike. (continued)
